Critic's Pick

'Get Shorty'

May 25, 1997|Kenneth Turan

Barry Sonnenfeld's 1995 light comedy set in an amoral setting was adapted from Elmore Leonard's novel about a Miami enforcer (John Travolta, pictured) connecting with a slick, low-budget producer (Gene Hackman). At the center of it all, an island of calm with every hair carefully razor cut, is Travolta's Chili Palmer, a hard guy with a soft heart. Travolta plays him as a Mafioso Cary Grant in a black leather coat, and the fit is perfect. Danny DeVito and Rene Russo co-star (Showtime Monday at 8 p.m.).
