Term Limits

May 25, 1997

I share the concerns of Bill Hauck and Fred Silva regarding how term limits have made the Assembly less effective (Commentary, May 7). Institutional memory is important not only for meeting real problems swiftly, but resisting seemingly "good" ideas that will not work.

Beyond losing critical institutional memory, I submit that elected officials knowing their term to be limited will only look at short-term solutions. After all, they won't be in office to face long-term consequences of their decisions.
