Flooding Over, Students Graduate

They piled sandbags instead of studying for final exams. So graduations were more reunion than farewell for Grand Forks high school seniors whose final year was cut short by the raging Red River. Classes were canceled last month at the two public high schools as the city struggled to prevent the river from flooding homes and businesses. Red River High's 271 seniors and the 262 from Central High graduated in separate ceremonies in a University of North Dakota building still being used as a shelter for flood victims. Graduation preparations last week marked the first time many had been able to see their friends, said Red River Principal Daryl Bragg.
