'Lost World' Finds a Home--at the Top

May 28, 1997|ROBERT W. WELKOS

Devouring box-office records, Steven Spielberg's dinosaur sequel "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" not only became the top opening film of all time, it was also expected to hit $100 million on Tuesday, faster than any movie in history.

The Universal Pictures' release took in $90.2 million over the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend and more than $2.5 million during Thursday night previews.

The film broke records on all four days, taking in $21.6 million on Friday, $24.4 million on Saturday, $26.1 million on Sunday and $18 million on Monday. It is on a course to hit $100 million faster than last year's "Independence Day" (seven days) and 1993's "Jurassic Park" (nine days). "Lost World" accounted for 62% of the total weekend box office.
