Manhattan Beach Elementary School Wins National Award

South Bay

May 28, 1997

Students at Pacific School in Manhattan Beach were singing "Pacific Is Terrific" and tying blue ribbons around every pole on campus Tuesday after they learned that the elementary school had been selected for the prestigious National Blue Ribbon School Award.

Students attended a special assembly where Rep. Jane Harman (D-Rolling Hills) congratulated them. She also presented the school with an American flag flown at the White House.

The award marks the first time that Pacific, the first school in Manhattan Beach, has received the distinction. The campus, which houses students from kindergarten to sixth grade, is one of 46 schools around the nation selected for this year's national award that recognizes schools with remarkable results.

"We are on cloud nine, we are so thrilled," said Principal Christine Norvell, who runs the 712-student campus with co-principal Janey Perle. "Our school is all about catching children when they are being good. Today is an extraordinary day."

Pacific was selected because of programs it provides to students and the support network it offers to teachers.
