Athletics Hold Off Royals to Win in 10

May 28, 1997|From Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jose Canseco and Scott Spiezio had two runs batted in each when Oakland batted around in the 10th inning Tuesday night, and the Athletics held on for a wild, 8-6, victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Kansas City took a 2-0 lead into the ninth before the A's-- held to one hit for eight-plus innings by Jose Rosado--got a two-run homer by Mark McGwire and a solo shot from Scott Spiezio to take the lead.

But the Royals sent the game into extra innings on pinch-hitter Scott Cooper's homer in the bottom of the ninth.

Scott Brosius doubled leading off the 10th against Hipolito Pichardo (1-1), and Canseco hit a two-run double off Jeff Montgomery. After Spiezio's two-run single, George Williams added an RBI single to make the score 8-3.

The Royals got three runs in the bottom of the inning off Aaron Small on an RBI single by Chili Davis and Johnny Damon's two-run single off Dane Johnson. Johnson, though, struck out Jose Offerman with runners at first and third for his first major-league save.

Billy Taylor (2-3) got the win despite giving up Cooper's homer.

Both teams were playing their third consecutive extra-inning games.

Rosado, who had lost three consecutive decisions, had eight strikeouts.
