Plugged Up

June 01, 1997|Steve Hochman

Anyone attending the two tapings of the Fleetwood Mac reunion album and MTV telecast couldn't help but notice that the sessions were not at all unplugged, as had been suggested in initial reports of the event--save for a couple of numbers and, of course, the USC marching band that joined for the "Tusk" and "Don't Stop" encores.

So how can this be part of the "MTV Unplugged" series?

It won't. Rather than use the "Unplugged" logo with the Un crossed out, as was done for Bruce Springsteen's electric appearance in 1992, no franchise brand name will be attached to this production, which premieres on the cable channel Aug. 12.

Meanwhile, fans not at the intimate shows will have to wait to hear the song that precipitated the reunion--Lindsey Buckingham's spooky "Bleed to Love Her." It was while recording that song for a since-delayed solo album that Buckingham gathered Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks in the studio. Though the band used the song in the reunion shows, the live version won't be released, with the studio version still planned for Buckingham's solo album, now scheduled for January release following the band's fall tour.
