4 New Yorkers to Share $70-Million Lottery Jackpot

June 03, 1997| From Reuters

NEW YORK — Four New York state residents will split a $70-million lottery jackpot, the third largest in the state's history, officials said.

Saturday's Lotto drawing capped three days of brisk ticket buying by New Yorkers eager to become millionaires.

Two of the winning tickets were held by New York City residents, the third by a Long Island resident and the fourth by an upstate buyer.

Each winner will receive $17.5 million, according to Lotto officials.

The odds of winning the drawing were 12.9 million to 1, according to Rick Grenell, a lottery spokesman. This lottery is the largest in North America, pulling in $4 billion in lottery games sales last year.

The largest New York lottery drawing was in January 1991, a $90-million jackpot with nine players splitting the winnings. In October 1994, a pot of $72.5 million was divided up among four players.
