Nikolai Tikhonov; Former Soviet Prime Minister

Former Soviet Prime Minister Nikolai Tikhonov, 92, one of the last of the Old Guard who reportedly opposed Mikhail Gorbachev's drive to liberalize Soviet society. From 1980 to 1985, Tikhonov headed the Council of Ministers, which was responsible for carrying out policies dictated by the Communist Party. Like others of his generation, Tikhonov was associated with the stern and inefficient policies of Leonid Brezhnev. He resigned six months after Gorbachev gained power. On Sunday in Moscow, reportedly of pneumonia.
