Reds' Carrasco Pleads for a Trade

June 09, 1997

A day after he was demoted to triple-A Indianapolis only to be called back a few hours later, Cincinnati Red reliever Hector Carrasco was still angry and still hopeful he'll be playing somewhere else next year.

"Like I said in spring training, I want to get traded," Carrasco said Sunday. "I don't know what they're thinking. When they keep sending me back and forth, it's like they're playing with me."

When the Reds needed a spot for Felix Rodriguez, who had to be promoted Saturday because of a clause in his contract, the Reds optioned Carrasco to Indianapolis. He was recalled when starter Mike Morgan went on the disabled list.

"I'm going to play winter ball. I'm going to be ready for any team they want me to get traded to," Carrasco said. "The day I get traded, I'll be happy. The way Ray Knight is treating me, I don't like it."

Padre reserve infielder Craig Shipley, who left Saturday night's game with a strained right quadriceps, will likely be back in a couple of days, Manager Bruce Bochy said. Also, Padre right-hander Joey Hamilton strained a muscle in his side in Friday night's game. The team will know by Tuesday whether Hamilton will be able to make a scheduled start Wednesday against St. Louis. . . . Chicago shortstop Shawon Dunston was helped from the field in the eighth inning of Sunday's game with the Expos after straining his left hamstring running out a grounder. Dunston, who was replaced by Rey Sanchez, is listed as day-to-day. . . . The Marlins put center fielder Devon White on the 15-day disabled list because of a pulled calf muscle he sustained Saturday. The club purchased the contract of outfielder John Wehner from triple-A Charlotte.
