Trying hard not to look jealous of oat bran, Kellogg's petitioned the FDA on June 3 to be permitted to claim health benefits for wheat bran. The Surgeon General's Report on Nutrition and Health acknowledged the benefits of wheat bran as long as nine years ago. New England Culinary Institute--familiarly known as Neckie (NECI)--is boldly going where no other cooking school has apparently yet gone. Cooking schools often run restaurants, but NECI's new third campus (in Burlington, Vt.) will have two restaurants, a bakery and a combination cafe, espresso bar, rotisserie, pizza hearth and wine room. And a market where you can buy kitchen wares, cookbooks and provisions.

Hmm. Supermarkets are putting in dining areas and takeout counters these days. Maybe they need to add a degree-granting culinary school or two.
