Illuminations

June 28, 1997|CYNDI Y. NIGHTENGALE

Modern light is showing its mettle.

Designed for high visual appeal and durability, these fixtures in the Nemo collection for Flos USA are shining examples of form and function.

The Nemo collection, designed by Italian architect Carlo Forcolini, has a wide range of styles. The two additions to the line are suitable for many interiors and outside areas.

The Constellation ($240 for white, silver or anthracite; $270 for polished or natural aluminum), the more versatile, is made of die-cast aluminum and molded prismatic glass that diffuses the light. It also features a quick-release opening mechanism. The wall-ceiling lamp works well in halls, staircases and bathrooms inside as well as outside carport, terraces and walls where lights need to be watertight.

The Thuban floor lamp ($675) has a handblown Murano glass diffuser. It is made of polished chrome and has a faceted chain pull and a fabric-covered electric cable, which adds warmth and character.

The Nemo collection is available at Details, Details, 4409 New Hampshire St., San Diego, (619) 692-0575 and Design Insights, 2662. Lacey St., Los Angeles, (213) 227-8443.

Kid Gloves

With school out, it's the perfect time to get your children's hands into the dirt with gardening or yard work.

And what better way to protect little ones' hands than with Wells Lamont gloves, sized for children up to age 14?

Three styles are available: the Thinsulate-lined grain cowhide style with a duraweave poly back (about $12) for outdoor chores and projects; a grain pigskin with Thermofill insulation (about $5); and the new cotton jersey glove (about $4) with jersey fleece lining for landscaping and gardening.

Wells Lamont gloves and products are available at hardware, home and garden centers and farm stores throughout Orange County.

Sea Worthy

For summer, the ship has definitely come in.

Nautical decorating is a hot theme for the season, especially for homes on a lake or at the beach.

Sailboats, anchors, flags and lighthouses are just a few of the motifs showing up on wallpaper and other household items. And they're not just for kids' rooms.

Marimekko features several wallpapers and borders with Maine images. There are a variety of stripes available in many widths and colors.

The Tug Tug border (about $20 for a 5-meter spool) and Cabana stripe (about $20 per single role) appeal to children and adults. The tugboats add a touch of whimsy to the bodacious stripes.

Marimekko products are available throughout the county; for the nearest retailer, call (905) 791-1547.
