CARMEL SETTLEMENT, West Bank — Israeli police said Sunday that a Palestinian was found shot to death near a Jewish settlement in the West Bank.

The circumstances of the death of Isa Misef, 61, of the village of Yatta near Hebron were not immediately clear.

Palestinians said Misef was shot by a Jewish settler in a passing car. Police initially said the man was killed in a drive-by shooting by unidentified gunmen, but they later backtracked from that report.

Hazam Misef, a relative of Isa, said he was in Yatta when a Palestinian who claimed to have seen the shooting told him about it.

Hazam said the man told him that he saw a Jewish settler stop his car and beckon Isa to him. When Isa reached the car, the man said, he was shot and the settler sped off.

Hazam said Israeli authorities took the man in for questioning.
