Family Wins 2-Year Fight to Keep Potbellied Pig

December 11, 1997

La Puente has a new legal resident: Montana the potbellied pig.

The city has given up its two-year fight to oust the porker from Michelle Walker's home in the wake of a state appeals court ruling Tuesday which held that La Puente's anti-pig ordinance was too ambiguous. The ruckus stemmed from a citation against the Walker family by an animal control officer in 1995.

At its meeting Tuesday night, the City Council unanimously agreed to grandfather in any pot-bellied pigs already in the city through the end of this year, and outlaw any additional ones.

"It's over, done," Walker said. "We can go back to living a normal life--with a pig."
