Council to Consider Selling 1.3-Acre Parcel

A city-owned parcel in the resort area may soon be up for sale.

The City Council today will consider giving the city staff authority to market the property at the southwest corner of Freedman Way and Clementine Street, and to entertain offers, either for sale or lease.

In 1991, the city agreed to buy a nearly 3-acre site for $4.7-million to provide parking in the tourist area, but that plan fell through.

The city later used the lot for trucks unloading for Anaheim Convention Center events. Recently, Caltrans and the Orange County Transportation Authority acquired 1.7 acres of the land as a relocation site for a city fire station, displaced by the widening of the Santa Ana Freeway.

Deputy City Manager Tom Wood said the city has received numerous inquiries from developers for the remaining 1.3 acres.

Before the council can consider the offers, members must decide whether they would rather sell or lease the land, or continue to hold it.

Also Tuesday, the council will consider renewing a contract with E. Del Smith and Co. for about $81,500 to represent the city in Washington on federal legislative issues.

Kristine Thalman, city intergovernmental and community relations manager, said the city has used the Washington-based lobbying group since 1982 and that the results have been successful.

The council also is expected to give final review of the master plan for the 130-acre Deer Canyon Park Preserve.

Today’s meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in council chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
