Milosevic Takes Another Presidency

World IN BRIEF : YUGOSLAVIA

July 24, 1997|From Times Wire Reports

Slobodan Milosevic resigned as president of Serbia and was sworn in as president of the rump Yugoslavia. The change of titles means Milosevic is still the unrivaled leader in what is left of Yugoslavia, now composed of Serbia and Montenegro. Milosevic is expected to strengthen the powers of the Yugoslav presidency, which he won in a hastily arranged election as he drew near the end of his final term as Serbian president. Hundreds of demonstrators blew whistles and pelted riot police with shoes in the avenue outside to protest the swearing in.
