The U.S. men's national water polo team got a shellacking by the Italian team, losing, 10-2, Thursday in the opening round of the Rome international water polo tournament.

John Vargas of Newport Beach, who coaches UC Irvine, is the U.S. coach. "This trip was intended to be a learning experience for our young players and tonight we got taken to school," he said.

Steve Gill of UC Irvine scored both goals for the United States, which hopes to do better today with the recent addition of Olympians Jeremy Laster of Capistrano Beach and Stanford and Chris Oeding of Newport Beach and UC Berkeley.
