LA HABRA — Sonora running back Mark Pascual scored the winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 7 minutes 20 seconds remaining as the Raiders defeated La Habra, 18-14, in a Freeway League game Friday at La Habra High.
Trailing 14-10 in the fourth-quarter, Sonora's quarterback Clint Patton engineered an eight-play, 63-yard drive for the winning score. Aby Gomez caught a two-point conversion pass from Josh Gonzalez for the final score. Patton was the key factor on the game-winning march, rushing for 39 yards in three carries.
"Clint [Patton] played a heck of a second half," Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen said. "He never quit or gave up."
Two plays after a La Habra turnover at the Highlander five, Sonora (4-5, 2-2) took a 7-0 lead with 8 minutes 33 seconds left in the first quarter when Patton scored from one yard. The Highlanders tied the score with one minute left in the half, when Robert Morales threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Josh Herrera.
Herrera, who rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns, gave La Habra (2-6-1, 0-3-1) a 14-7 lead when he scored on a 56-yard run early in the third quarter. Patton closed the gap to 14-10 on a 29-yard field goal with 1:12 left in third quarter.
The Raiders' victory was only their third over the Highlanders in the last 18 years, and it gave them the La Habra city championship.
