ANAHEIM — Sachs Bicycle Components is recalling about 16,500 Diamondback mountain bikes to replace their chains, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

The chains could break, causing a rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall or be injured, the commission said in a statement.

The agency said there were about 75 reports of chains breaking, resulting in four injuries, including a broken arm, cuts and bruises.

Only 1998 Diamondback bicycles with the following model names could be equipped with the chains: Sherwood, Lakeside, Interval, Expert, Voyager I, Voyager II, Sorrento, Sorrento SE and Wildwood DX.

Consumers who purchased one of these bicycles since July 1 should stop using it immediately and call their local Diamondback dealers to have the chain replaced, the agency said.
