An Oxnard man was recovering Friday from wounds he received the night before during an attempted carjacking.

Arturo Cosio, 23, was in fair condition at the Ventura County Medical Center after being shot in the arm about 8:20 p.m. Thursday near a pay phone on 5th Street and Rice Road, a Ventura County sheriff's spokesman said.

Cosio was walking back to his car after using the pay phone when he was approached by two young men. They demanded his wallet, and then walked him to his pickup truck, the spokesman said.

But when they tried to force Cosio to turn over his keys, he refused and was shot, the spokesman said. The two men fled the scene.

Wounded and bleeding, Cosio was able to drive to a friend's home and was then taken to Ventura County Medical Center by family members, officials said.

The investigation is continuing.
