Tennessee Rises After Rout

Tennessee moved up, Syracuse dropped out and No. 1 Penn State increased its lead in The Associated Press' Top 25 poll.

The Volunteers, coming off a 52-17 victory over Texas Tech on Saturday night, jumped two spots to No. 3 in the second poll of the season.

Syracuse, which lost to North Carolina State, 32-31, in overtime, fell out of the Top 25 a week after beating Wisconsin, 34-0, to jump to No. 13.

Penn State, which opens Saturday against Pittsburgh, received 23 first-place votes from the 70 sportswriters and broadcasters who vote in the poll. Florida remained No. 2.

In the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll, Florida was No. 1, followed by Penn State, Tennessee, Washington and Florida State.

Miami Hurricane junior guard Richard Mercier will miss the rest of the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee in the season opener Saturday at Baylor.
