September 04, 1997|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A suspect has been identified in the 1995 derailment of an Amtrak passenger train that killed one person and injured 78 others in the desert, according to a confidential FBI memo. The memo, apparently mistakenly faxed to news organizations, describes the suspect as having a law enforcement and firefighting background. On Oct. 9, 1995, the Amtrak Sunset Limited derailed in a remote area about 55 miles southwest of Phoenix. Officials found the track had been tampered with.
