September 04, 1997|Associated Press

Shoemaker, 23, a redshirt junior who backed up Steve Sarkisian last year, beat out Kevin Feterik, a sophomore with a strong, accurate arm. . . . Richard "Babe" Tysseling, a coach at Central College from 1937 to 1960, died after a long illness in Pella, Iowa. He was 86. . . . Last season, Oregon rushed for 310 yards--Saladin McCullough accounting for 223 yards and five touchdowns--in a 49-31 victory over Arizona. Tonight, the Wildcats go to Eugene, Ore., tonight for a Pacific 10 Conference game against the Ducks and McCullough.
