Canoeing

The National Championship Outrigger Canoe Competition, a race between Newport Beach and Catalina Island, is scheduled to start at 8 a.m., today at Newport Harbor.

The women's six-person outrigger race will be contested today as more than 35 women's crews start the 31-mile course from Newport Beach to Avalon on Catalina.

The men's race, which will include more than 60 crews, will start at 9 a.m. Sunday from Avalon Cove to Newport Dunes. Depending on ocean conditions, the men's crews should start arriving in Newport Beach about 1:30 p.m Sunday.
