Female Citadel Dropout Says She 'Didn't Like It'

September 07, 1997| Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS — One of two women who dropped out of this year's freshman class at The Citadel says she wasn't harassed or abused, just that she "just didn't like it."

Sandra Johnson of Shakopee, Minn., was one of 20 women to enroll in the Charleston, S.C., military college this year, the third in which the military school has allowed women. So far, 42 men also have dropped out out of a freshman class of 559.

Johnson told the Star Tribune that "I just didn't like it. I didn't see myself being there for four years. I know I could do it. I just didn't want to do it," she said.

Johnson said she was treated equally, which meant being awakened at 6 a.m. like the male freshmen and being screamed at.
