1996 in Review

Servite, which has never lost a Golden West League game, marched through its league schedule without a problem last year. But it shouldn't be as easy this season. Tustin and Saddleback, the second- and third-place teams in 1996, will more than likely wind up that way again this season. Saddleback, after taking some lumps last season, gained valuable experience and is expected to have one of its best teams in a long time.

Quarterback Greg Cicero of Servite, now at Texas, set all kinds of school records, despite playing with an injured hand most of the season. He ranked second in the county in passing and completed 174 of 288 passes for 3,078 yards and 30 touchdowns.

Tustin quarterback Todd Scott, now a senior, completed 65 of 110 passes for 1,205 and 12 touchdowns in an offense that averaged more than 600 yards a game. Tustin's wing-T formation produced some high numbers for several running backs, most notably junior running back DeShaun Foster, who led the county in scoring with 34 touchdowns and 218 points.

Defensive back Joseph Tagaloa, who returns this season for Saddleback, was among the county leaders in interceptions with five. Alvan Loretto of Servite led the league with six.

In the league's biggest game, Servite defeated host Tustin, 50-40, in a game that wasn't as close as the score.

Servite went into the Division V playoffs as the top-seeded team, but was beaten by Newport Harbor, 23-16, in the semifinals.

Tustin scored 101 points in its first two playoff games but also lost in the semifinals, falling to Santa Margarita, 31-0.
