Police Shoot Man After His Mother Is Wounded

September 10, 1997

A man who allegedly shot his mother before firing on firefighters and police was wounded by officers in a 20-minute shootout near Cal State Long Beach, authorities said Tuesday.

The woman, 67, yelled to her neighbors in the 5900 block of Los Santos Street at 5:35 p.m. that she had been shot, said Long Beach police spokeswoman Karen Kerr. When firefighters arrived to treat her, the suspect, Edward Gember, 46, allegedly fired a rifle at them, striking the fire engine, Kerr said.

When police arrived, they returned fire, wounding Gember in the shoulder and groin. Gember emerged from the house at 6 p.m. and surrendered, Kerr said. No officers or firefighters were injured, she said.

Gember's mother was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, where she was listed in serious but stable condition. Gember is being held in the County-USC Medical Center Jail Ward where he is in stable condition, Kerr said.
