Reno Calls for Fight on Juvenile Crime

September 11, 1997|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Congress must put more money into after-school crime-prevention programs to head off a juvenile crime wave expected over the next decade, Atty. Gen. Janet Reno said. She spoke at a treatment center for at-risk youth in Rockville, Md., as a private group released a study that found that most violent juvenile crime occurs between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., between the end of the school day and the time parents return home from work. The report buttresses the Clinton administration's drive to keep after-school programs, such as sports, music and drama activities, intact, the Justice Department said in a written statement.
