City to Celebrate Mexican Holiday

September 13, 1997|KARIMA A. HAYNES

Folk dances, mariachi bands and speeches will commemorate Mexican Independence Day at the city's second annual celebration Monday at San Fernando City Hall.

Activities will include performances by the Ballet Folklorico Ollin, Ballet Folklorico Mexican del Valle de San Fernando, Mariachi Recuerdo Mexicano, the Johnny Alonso Band and the dance troupe Viva Panama, among others.

The event marks the 187th anniversary of Mexico's first salvo in its war to gain independence from Spain.

On Sept. 16, 1810, Padre Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla set off Mexico's war of independence in the town of Dolores.

His cry of freedom ignited the 11-year battle between the nations and is still reenacted at many independence celebrations.

San Fernando's celebration begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 117 Macneil St.
