Rio Mesa 34, Channel Islands 6--Running back Jay Flores rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns in 21 carries to lead the Spartans at Rio Mesa.

Behind a strong offensive line, Rio Mesa rolled for 400 yards--including 384 on the ground--and five touchdowns, including four in the second half.

Rio Mesa limited Channel Islands to 101 yards and forced four turnovers.

The Spartans scored on their opening drive, driving 65 yards capped by a two-yard run by Flores.

Channel Islands running back Ray Carmel scored on a two-yard run in the second half, but a trick conversion pass was knocked down in the end zone, and Rio Mesa kept its lead, 7-6.

Quarterback Paul Ayala scored on a two-yard run on the Spartans' first drive of the second half to spark a 27-point second-half outburst.
