Chiefs Waive 1st-Round Bust

September 17, 1997

Kansas City offensive tackle Trezelle Jenkins, the Chiefs' first-round draft choice in 1995 who never made the grade, was waived.

Jenkins was inactive for 15 of the Chiefs 16 games his rookie year, and played in six games in his second year. He played poorly in the season-opening loss at Denver, lost his starting job to Glenn Parker for the second game at Oakland and was inactive for Sunday's game against Buffalo.

Meanwhile, linebacker Derrick Thomas, who sat out Sunday's game because of an arm injury, is uncertain for Sunday's game against Carolina, Coach Marty Schottenheimer said.

Thomas has been slowed since early training camp because of the injury.

Alan Phipps, perhaps best known for joining with his brother in 1965 to buy the Denver Broncos to keep them in their hometown, died Monday in Denver. He was 84. The cause of death was not disclosed.
