Annual Cleanup Day Along Coast Scheduled

September 19, 1997

About 10,000 Los Angeles County volunteers are expected to pitch in Saturday for the annual Coastal Cleanup Day.

The event, which is in its 13th year, grew out of the California Coastal Commission's Adopt a Beach program, said Toni Pogue, spokeswoman for Heal the Bay, which is coordinating the countywide effort.

Cleanup sites extend from Leo Carrillo Beach to Long Beach, and include the Los Angeles River and Ballona Creek, she said. They also include dive sites off Malibu, Santa Monica, Marina del Rey and Redondo Beach.

The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon.

Last year, volunteers collected 25,000 pounds of trash, including a concrete park bench from the bottom of the bay. Trash also included 160,000 cigarette butts, 170,000 pieces of plastic, 45,000 bottles and pieces of glass and a television, she said.

Volunteers will work in groups of three, and will be handed gloves, trash bags and bags to collect recyclable items, she said.
