Century Beats Glenn for First Win of Season

September 19, 1997|MELANIE NEFF

SANTA ANA — It wasn't pretty, but Century picked up its first victory Thursday night, defeating Norwalk John Glenn, 24-17, at Santa Ana Stadium.

Despite taking a 24-7 lead into the fourth quarter, the Centurions (1-1) did everything they could to give the game away. Fortunately for Century, the Eagles (0-2) didn't want it.

With 10 minutes 29 seconds left in the game, Glenn scored on a five-yard run, bringing the score to 24-14. On the ensuing kickoff, Century's Albert Salazar couldn't cover the ball and Glenn recovered it on the Centurion 22. Four plays later Rodolfo Castro intercepted a David Martinez pass in the end zone, but on the return, Castro fumbled and Glenn recovered on the 15-yard line for a first down.

But Century's defense held the Eagles to a 32-yard field goal and with 5:09 left the Centurions ran out the clock.

On the opening drive, Century running back Fortino Rivera scored on a 26-yard run. After Glenn tied the score, 7-7, Gustavo Gonzalez ran back the kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown and Ramiro Carasa put Century ahead, 21-7, on a 35-yard run early in the third quarter.

Carasa finished with 96 yards in 11 carries and Rivera gained 81 yards in 10 carries.
