HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL / WEEK 2 | FIELD REPORT

Great Scott, He Left His Cheat Sheet At Home

September 20, 1997

Buena High football Coach Rick Scott, whose team faced sixth-ranked Agoura on Friday night, did the unthinkable.

He left his game plan at home.

Scott had to enlist the help of his daughter Megan, 21, to drive to his house and pick up his notes.

"It's her fault if we lose," Scott quipped before the game.

Megan should get some credit instead. Buena won, 14-9.

Give and take: For Oxnard, it was one two-way starter in, one out. Both hobbling.

Against Newbury Park, Jaredd Galloway, a center and linebacker, returned from a knee injury that kept him out of the Yellowjackets' opener last week. But Eric Swanger, a wide receiver and free safety, missed the Newbury Park game with an ankle injury.

Swanger had all five of the Yellowjackets' receptions in their opener last week. But his absence was especially critical on defense.

Newbury Park burned the Oxnard secondary quickly as Nick Czernek passed for 204 yards and three touchdowns in the first half. Included were two strikes over the middle to Jake Farrel for gains of 50 and 58 yards.

Injury report: Mike Simo, Newbury Park's starting tailback and free safety, sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Oxnard and is out for the season.

Sidelined: The Saugus sideline resembled an infirmary Friday night with nine players--including five starters--out of uniform with injuries.

"I guess we find out early if the second team can play," Saugus Coach Ron Hilton said.

And the band played on: The Birmingham-Grant game was delayed 18 minutes when a bank of lights along the visiting sideline lost power.

But the crowd was still entertained during the unexpected intermission. The Birmingham band, some 50 members strong, played without interruption until power was restored.

They did not play "The Night the Lights Went Out in Van Nuys."
