COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : UCLA

McElroy Loses While Gaining

September 22, 1997|JIM HODGES

Despite his first two-touchdown day as a collegian, UCLA receiver Jim McElroy went downhill at Texas.

McElroy, who has switched to flanker from his accustomed split end spot, caught four passes for 26 yards, well off the per-catch average of 19.3 yards. He is averaging 15.7 yards for each of his 15 catches in the new position, which generally involves running shorter routes.

And his 100-yard reception streak was broken at three games.

Not that he has cut out the long play.

His 50-yard reception against Washington State is tied with Skip Hicks' 50-yarder against Tennessee for the longest throw-and-catch hookup of the Bruin season.

Through three games, UCLA has given up 70 points, as opposed to 73 at this time a year ago, and 1,277 yards as opposed to 1,069.
