Cultural Affairs Agency to Run Community Center

September 25, 1997

The Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department has agreed to run a folk arts center at Banning Landing Community Center.

For years, Wilmington residents asked the Port of Los Angeles to build a community center. Now that the $3-million facility is under construction, residents have been trying to figure out how the site should be managed.

The Friends of Banning Landing recently accepted an offer from the Cultural Affairs Department to run the center. The department plans to spend $150,000 annually to run the waterfront site as a community center where neighborhood groups can hold meetings and art, dance and music classes can be offered regularly.

The center is scheduled to open next April.
