Council Votes to Move Site of Skateboard Park

September 25, 1997

City officials have dropped a plan to build a skateboard park at South Park in favor of a 10,000-square-foot facility at the Hermosa Beach Community Center because of complaints that the South Park facility would be too noisy.

City Council members voted unanimously to move the site after residents presented a petition Tuesday night with more than 150 signatures. City administrators will evaluate a plan to build a concrete park in the community center parking lot next to the tennis courts, Councilwoman Julie Oakes said. The formal proposal will be presented to the City Council on Oct. 16.

Oakes said the community center site is a good compromise. She said there are fewer homes nearby so there will be fewer concerns about noise. She said the site is also bigger and more accessible.

The city began its attempt to build a skateboard park more than a year ago when hundreds of skateboarders complained that municipal codes prevent them from skating in most places in town.
