BMWs, Rolls Royces Are Recalled for Defects

September 26, 1997|Bloomberg News

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that 410,000 BMW automobiles manufactured between 1992 and 1997 will be recalled to correct a problem that could prevent the cars from slowing down properly. In addition, Rolls Royce Motors, the British luxury auto maker, is recalling 1,621 cars because of possible brake fluid leaks. In the BMW recall, a safety probe found the cylindrical plastic casing that holds the cruise control and throttle cables could "break due to environmental influences coupled with vibration." Models affected include the BMW 318, 325, M3, Z3, 525, 530, 740 and 840. The German luxury car maker will begin notifying owners of affected vehicles by the end of October. Car owners may return the vehicles to a dealer for installation of a protective steel clip. The agency said the Rolls Royce recall covers various 1994 to 1998 models, including the Siver Dawn, Flying Spur, Bentley Brooklands and Bentley Azure. Owner notification began last month.
