Sonora Stands Up to Pressure in 14-7 Victory

September 27, 1997|JASON HILL

LA HABRA — There are times when the pressures of competition can cause players to lose their composure. The pressure got to Sonora on Friday night, but the Raiders were able to stop a late surge by Garden Grove and win a nonleague game, 14-7, at La Habra.

Garden Grove's Brandon Jones recovered an onside kick at midfield with 1 minute 52 seconds left to play. Ricky Welty was sacked for a 13-yard loss, then completed passes of three and 12 yards to bring up fourth down and eight. Welty scrambled for three yards but came up short.

Sonora (2-1) controlled the first half, taking a 14-0 lead, despite many penalties.

"We lost our poise and got called for dumb personal fouls and unsportsmanlike conducts," Sonora Coach Mark Takkinen said. "It was close to 200 yards in penalties."

Garden Grove struggled to take advantage of these mistakes, and did, late in the fourth quarter. A pass-interference call in the end zone gave the Argonauts a first down on the 11-yard line. On fourth-and-three, Welty found Ulysses Linares in the end zone and cut the lead to seven, setting up the onside recovery.

Sonora's Jerron Cannon injured a leg late in the first half. He spent most of the second half on the trainer's table. According to Takkinen, Cannon was later taken to the hospital for X-rays.
