Making Waves: Pepperdine catcher Dane Sardinha was selected West Coast Conference player of the week after hitting four home runs in the Waves' three-game sweep of Portland.

Sardinha, a freshman catcher from Oahu, Hawaii, was six for 13, scored eight runs and drove in eight runs. The Waves (20-14, 10-2) outscored Portland, 56-19. Sardinha has 10 homers to lead Pepperdine, which has hit 44 after hitting only 33 last season.

BOXING

Ringing victory: After beginning his professional career with 13 consecutive knockouts, Lance Whitaker has discovered how to box his way to victory.

Whitaker (15-0), a 26-year-old heavyweight from Granada Hills, scored an eight-round unanimous decision over Garing Lane at Atlantic City on Friday.

Whitaker, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound power puncher, is scheduled to fight again in May.

Return event: Monthly boxing is scheduled to continue at The Derby Club at Seaside Park in Ventura through the end of the year.

Oxnard promoter Robert Valez has released dates for one Thursday night program each month. The series resumes April 16. Fighters are to be determined.

VOLLEYBALL

Down a notch: Pepperdine slipped to No. 2 in the American Volleyball Coaches' Assn. men's poll.

The Waves (16-3), who lost to Ohio State last week, held the top spot for two weeks.
