Lea Takes Lead for Camarillo

April 03, 1998

Matt Lea of Camarillo High won the 400 meters in a school record of 47.6 seconds, took the 200 in 22.1 and ran legs on the victorious 400-meter and 1,600-meter relay teams to pace the visiting Scorpions to a 104-31 victory over Royal in a Marmonte League meet Thursday.

Lea, a senior who is undefeated in the 200 and 400 this season, cut a tenth of a second off his previous best in the 400.

He ran the second leg on the 400 relay team that clocked 44.0 and the anchor leg on the 1,600 relay team that timed 3:26.0 for Camarillo (6-1, 4-1 in league).

In other boys' meets:

Rio Mesa 113, Oxnard 41, Hueneme 26--Junior Jerome Stevens led a trio of double winners for host Rio Mesa in a Channel League meet.

Stevens, who had a best of 48-7 1/2 in the shotput last year, won that event at 52 feet 5 inches and the discus with a personal best of 147-2 for the two-time defending league champion Spartans (8-0, 5-0).

Desmond Davis of Oxnard, the defending Ventura County champion in the 100, won that event in 10.8 and the 200 in 22.8 for the Yellowjackets (4-2 in league).

Canyon 77, Burroughs 59--Aaron Thompson of Canyon won the high jump with a career best of 6-4, the 110 high hurdles in 17.2 and the 300 intermediates in 44.4 for the Cowboys (3-1, 2-0) in a Foothill League meet at Burroughs.

Notre Dame 85, St. Francis 41--Justin Fargas of Notre Dame, the defending state champion in the 100, cruised to winning times of 22.7 in the 200 and 53.0 in the 400 for the Knights (4-0, 3-0) in a Mission League meet at St. Francis.

Birmingham 75 1/2, Cleveland 51 1/2--Junior Tiffany Burgess of Birmingham won the 800 in 2:27.1, the 1,600 in 5:22.0 and the 3,200 in 11:40.6 to help the host Braves (4-0, 4-0) outscore Cleveland, 26-1, in the distance events of the Northwest Valley Conference meet.

Freshman Schquay Brignac won the 100 in 12.7 and the high jump at a region-leading 5-9 for Cleveland (2-2, 2-2). Brignac missed three times at what would have been a career best of 5-11.

Rio Mesa 148, Oxnard 29, Hueneme 6--Freshman Porchea Carroll of host Rio Mesa (8-0, 5-0) won the 100 in 12.1, the 200 in 25.5 and the long jump at 17-7 1/2 in the Channel League meet.

She also ran the first leg on the victorious 400 relay team that clocked 50.5.

Camarillo 74, Royal 62--Freshman Jaclyn Pedersen of host Royal won the 800 in 2:32.7, the 1,600 in 5:17.1 and the 3,200 in 11:37.0, but it wasn't enough to overcome Camarillo's superior depth in a Marmonte League meet.

Grant 82, Monroe 41--Freshman Alexis Witherspoon and senior Angela Terry each won three individual events for the Lancers (4-0, 4-0) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference meet at Monroe.

Witherspoon clocked 12.7 in the 100 meters, 26.2 in the 220 yards and spanned 16 feet in the long jump.

Terry timed 15.9 in the 100-meter high hurdles, 50.3 in the 330-yard lows and cleared five feet in the high jump for the Lancers, sixth in last year's City championships.
