The Book They Want Harriet Doerr to Write

April 05, 1998

Bravas to Susan Salter Reynolds for an article superbly and penetratingly written--and to her subject ("Harriet Doerr's Incredible Journey," Feb. 8). We treasure the indomitable Doerr's life of simple honesty, coupled with her joyous remembrance of the small things that make life worthwhile.

And a lusty bravo to photographer Anacleto Rapping for the picture, incredibly haunting in concept and execution, of Doerr in her "garden of memories," a photograph that surely must be submitted for whatever awards are available.

To Doerr, I say: Please, please, write the book that's waiting in your head. We want to hear all about those early Pasadena days and about how you came to be the compelling writer and personality that you are. Don't keep us dangling.

I've been a Doerr fan since "Stones for Ibarra," and my books are dogeared from having been passed around to friends. I consider her one of the world's finest living writers, and she has been an inspiration to me in my own writing career.
