Cheryl Miller Award Goes to Greco Again

April 07, 1998

For the second consecutive season, Crescenta Valley High's Michelle Greco has been named The Times' 1997-98 Cheryl Miller Award recipient as Southern California's top girls' basketball player.

Greco, who has committed to UCLA, averaged 22.1 points, 9.8 rebounds and five assists in leading Crescenta Valley to its third consecutive Pacific League championship.

Last month, Greco was named The Times' Valley player of the year for the second time.

BASEBALL

Maiden return: After missing the first nine games because of knee surgery after a football injury, senior second baseman Jared Maiden of El Camino Real High last week returned to the starting lineup. Coach Mike Maio couldn't have been more pleased.

"He's what we call a blue-collar worker," Maio said. "He does his job. He's a guy you need if you're going to win."

Maiden was a key member of El Camino Real's City Section championship teams in football, baseball and wrestling.

FOOTBALL

Harvard to Harvard: Sam Miller, an All-Mission League offensive lineman at Harvard-Westlake, has committed to Harvard University, where he hopes to play fullback.

SOCCER

Ivy Leaguer: Zach Schwartz, an all-region and All-Southern Section Division IV sweeper from Harvard-Westlake, has committed to Dartmouth.
