April 10, 1998|LESLEY WRIGHT

The city would spend nearly $18 million on roads, bridges, computers and parks in the next fiscal year if the City Council approves the proposed capital improvements budget this spring.

Council members and planning commissioners received the annual document this week for a preliminary review. City officials propose to spend more than $91 million on improvements in the next seven years.

The Public Works Department would spend more than $11 million next year. Projects include widening some major intersections, such as The City Drive at Chapman Avenue and Main Street at Chapman and at La Veta avenues.

Police would receive a new closed-circuit security system for $100,000. And an extensive recreation project at McPherson Magnet School will open in the fall.
