Anti-Gang Program Gets $147,000 Grant

April 11, 1998

A gang prevention program in East Los Angeles has received a $147,000 state grant as part of a statewide campaign to reduce youth crime, officials said Friday.

The Community Gang Reduction Project, operating since 1976, assigns parents to work with families whose children are on probation or considered at risk. The money will be used to provide training and parole supervision for juvenile and young adult offenders.

"It is critical to reach at-risk youth before they enter the criminal justice system," said Francisco J. Alarcon, director of the California Youth Authority, who awarded the grant.
