Three teachers who were selected as Capistrano Unified School District's 1998 Teachers of the Year will advance to countywide competition in October.

The teachers were chosen last week at a ceremony before about 450 family members, co-workers and friends at Marriott's Laguna Cliffs Resort in Dana Point. They were selected from a list of 39 teachers of the year nominated at each of the district's schools.

The three winners are: Rob Lipsett, a speech and language pathologist, nominated by Clarence Lobo Elementary School in San Clemente; David Chamberlain, a seventh-grade math teacher at Aliso Viejo Middle School; and Betsy Schmitz, a Spanish and French teacher at Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo.
