WHAT THE CAMERA SAW: The Week and More

In Their Element

April 14, 1998

It's all in the perspective. Surveying the scene, observers can become part of that scene. That's how it is for a woman taking in the city view from a downtown Los Angeles hotel, and for county Metropolitan Transportation Authority security officers on crowd duty at a Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. Lifeguard competitor Craig Hummer takes it a step further, becoming one with the sea near his Venice home.

IT'S A COVER-UP

Some things don't change from job to job. USC baseball teammates pitch in to protect the field when rain delays the start of a game, while construction worker Bobby McCarron does his part at the Redondo Beach Pier parking structure, spreading plastic to keep out dust from nearby businesses.
