Background Checks for Crossing Guards

April 17, 1998|MIMI KO CRUZ

Crossing guards will be required to undergo criminal background checks as part of a contract ratified this week by the local elementary school district.

The Fullerton School District and the city will split the cost of the $151,382 crossing guard program, while the city will be responsible for employing the guards from a private company.

City Atty. Richard D. Jones said the state law that requires background checks on school district employees does not apply to the crossing guards since they technically work for the city and on public streets--not on district property.

Nevertheless, district trustees said they would be willing to pay more to run fingerprint checks of the guards.

"The public holds us responsible for not looking for loopholes in the law," Trustee Hilda Sugarman said. "I wouldn't like to skirt our responsibility.
