City Council Candidate Wins by 2-Vote Margin

April 17, 1998

By two votes, attorney and publisher Deborah K. Orlik won a seat on the City Council after ballots were verified in Tuesday's special election, the city clerk said Thursday.

On election night, Orlik had trailed film producer Anthony Portantino in the battle to serve out the term of a deceased councilman.

City Clerk Pat Anderson said that after a computer glitch was worked out Thursday, Orlik finished with 1,273 votes compared with Portantino's 1,271. They were among four candidates, including former Los Angeles Fire Chief Donald Manning, seeking to serve out the 11 months left in the term of Jack Edwards.
