Latinos in Spotlight at UCI Conference

More than a dozen prominent scholars and activists will participate in a conference Saturday at UC Irvine titled, "150 Years of Chicano/Chicana Education: 1848-1998."

The conference starts at 9 a.m. at the Social Science Lecture Hall on campus.

Panelists include Eugene E. Garcia, of UC Berkeley, who will speak on bilingual education and achievement; Gary Orfield, of Harvard University, who will discuss segregation and equity; Patricia Gandara, of UC Davis, speaking on higher education; and several historians who will discuss the progress of Latino education, and other students and educators.

The conference is sponsored by the Harvard Educational Review, along with the vice chancellor of Student Services at UCI, the UCI Department of Education, Center for Educational Partnerships, the Center for Research on Latinos in a Global Society, the Center for Collaborative Research and Education and Project Smart.
